Veggies have no fear – there’s a whole section of the New Forest Food and Drink Festival dedicated to delicious, meat-free dishes and delights, starting with A Celebration of Vegetarian Food with chef and TV presenter Simon Rimmer, of Channel 4’s Sunday Brunch.
The four-course dinner will form the headline event for this section of the festival and takes place at the beautiful Burley Manor on Tuesday November 1 at 7pm.
Guests joining this special occasion will start off with a glass of Perrier Jouet Champagne, followed by fried halloumi with lemon and capers, a light salad of scorched broccoli and quinoa, an Italian bean casserole topped with arancini and creamy, chocolatey Zucotto, with tea or coffee and biscotti to follow.
They’ll also be entertained by a 30-minute talk by Simon, star of Channel 4’s Sunday Brunch, talking about his adventures in cookery. Price is £99 a head.
Then, on Wednesday November 2 at 6.30pm, Village Veg of Brockenhurst is holding an autumn veggie-fest cookery demonstration at their Brockenhurst store, showing visitors how to cook squashes and other autumn goodies. Booking is essential and places, costing just £5 per person, are limited.
Cheese lovers won’t miss out either, as Lyburn cheese, which is made with vegetarian rennet, is headlining the ‘Cheese and the Forest Larder’ theme.
On Friday November 4 at 2pm, the Drift Inn, Beaulieu, is holding a ‘Cheese Tasting with Mr Lyburn’. Mike Smales – Mr Lyburn himself! – will be talking guests through his award-wining cheeses before they try Lyburn Gold, Stoney Cross, Lyburn’s Winchester, Old Winchester and nettle and oak-smoked cheeses.
Once you’ve picked your favourite the Drift Inn will serve it up to you as part of a classic Ploughman’s just the way it’s meant to be. The cheese event is £14.95 per head.
Veggies will also find firm favourites in the Festival’s other themes, such as The Very English Afternoon Tea (featuring a headline afternoon tea at the stunning Montagu Arms, walking picnics and pop-up cafes) and Sweet Forest Somethings (chocolate and fudge making/tasting, jams and marshmallows).
